You’re about to tour theatres with Timeless Voices of Jazz. What can audiences expect?
“Audiences can expect a celebration of some of the greatest songs ever written,
performed by a fantastic band and singers who genuinely love this music. Jazz is all about storytelling, emotion and connection. We’ll be honouring the great vocalists who inspired generations while bringing our own personality and energy to the music. Every show has its own atmosphere, and that’s one of the things I love most about jazz.”
Jazz has clearly played an important role in your life. What does the genre mean to you personally?
“Jazz is in my blood. It was one of the first styles of music I heard growing up and it’s a genre I’ve returned to throughout my career. It combines incredible musicianship with complete freedom of expression. Whether it’s a tender ballad or a swinging big-band number, jazz has a way of speaking directly to people.”
Your father, Ray Ellington, was a hugely respected musician. How much of an influence was he on your musical journey?
“An enormous influence. My father, Ray Ellington, introduced me to a world of music from a very young age. Watching him perform and seeing the respect he had for great songs and great musicians left a lasting impression on me. He taught me that music isn’t just about singing notes—it’s about communicating something meaningful.”
Which singers have inspired you most throughout your career?
“I’ve always loved the great jazz vocalists. Nat King Cole remains one of my biggest influences. His phrasing, warmth and effortless style were extraordinary. Frank Sinatra was a master storyteller who could make every lyric feel personal, and Tony Bennett brought such elegance and authenticity to every performance. Those artists set a standard that singers still aspire to today.”
Many people know you from Strictly Come Dancing. What has that experience meant to you?
“It’s been a tremendous privilege. Strictly has introduced live music to millions of people and I’ve loved being part of that journey. Working alongside such talented musicians, singers and dancers every week keeps you on your toes. It’s a show that celebrates great music and performance, which is something I care deeply about.”
You’ve also worked with some of the biggest names in music. Are there any memories that stand out?
“I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible artists over the years, including Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Quincy Jones. Each of them had an extraordinary commitment to excellence. What struck me most was that despite their success, they never stopped striving to make the music better. Being around artists of that calibre teaches you a lot about professionalism and dedication.”
Why do you think jazz continues to resonate with audiences today?
“Because it’s timeless. Great songs never go out of fashion. Jazz celebrates melody, lyrics, emotion and musicianship. In a world that moves very quickly, there’s something special about sitting in a theatre and hearing these wonderful songs performed live. They still have the power to move people, just as they did decades ago.”
Finally, what are you most looking forward to on this theatre tour?
“Sharing this music with audiences around the country. There’s nothing quite like
performing live and feeling that connection with a room full of people. These songs have stood the test of time for a reason, and it’s a joy to help keep them alive for a new generation.”
Timeless Voices of Jazz will be performing at New Theatre, Peterborough on Sunday 19th July at 5pm.
